Position Overview

This is a senior leadership role with overall responsibility for the organisation’s core operations and people strategy. The Head of Operations & People will ensure the smooth, compliant, and efficient running of facilities, catering, reception, data systems, and volunteering programmes, while also overseeing HR delivery in collaboration with external partners. The role is both strategic and hands-on, ideal for a proactive, organised leader with a passion for creating safe and inclusive spaces where young people and staff can thrive.

Core Responsibilities

Operations & Infrastructure

  • Lead day-to-day management of facilities, catering, reception, and volunteering.

  • Maintain health & safety, safeguarding, and regulatory compliance across all operational areas.

  • Develop operational policies, systems, and supplier relationships to support organisational delivery.

People & Culture

  • Work with external HR partners to deliver effective HR services and ensure compliance with employment legislation.

  • Oversee recruitment, onboarding, and employee relations, embedding inclusive and values-led practices.

  • Champion a positive workplace culture through wellbeing initiatives, staff development, and engagement.

Data, Systems & Administration

  • Oversee the use and development of internal systems such as Salesforce and Breathe HR.

  • Ensure data accuracy and lead on the reporting of operational and impact metrics.

  • Support finance processes including payroll data collation, invoice approval, and budget monitoring.

  • Provide secretariat support to the Board of Trustees and governance committees.

Leadership & Strategic Input

  • Line manage five team members across operations and administration functions.

  • Contribute to strategic planning and organisational development as part of the Senior Leadership Team.

  • Prepare reports for the Board and external stakeholders on key operational issues and outcomes.

Capabilities Required

  • Proven operational leadership experience, ideally within a charity, youth, or community setting.

  • Strong organisational and problem-solving skills with a calm, pragmatic approach.

  • Experience managing HR processes including recruitment and employee relations.

  • Skilled at managing teams and working in partnership with external providers.

  • Excellent administrative and IT proficiency, including familiarity with CRM and HR systems.

  • Confident communicator with the ability to build trust and influence across teams.

Desirable Skills

  • Level 5 qualification (or equivalent experience) in HR, Business Administration, or related discipline.

  • Experience managing volunteer programmes or community engagement.

  • Understanding of charity governance and board-level reporting.

  • Demonstrable commitment to safeguarding, equity, and inclusive practice.
